Item Description
This captivating piece by Steve Jackson exudes a quiet elegance, where simplicity meets profound emotion. The woman, delicately rendered in charcoal, appears lost in contemplation, her serene expression and closed eyes conveying a world of unspoken thoughts. Her raven-black hair is meticulously styled in a traditional updo, with sleek, glossy strands contrasting against the soft texture of her skin. Subtle yet bold, the artist introduces a striking splash of crimson—her lips and garment—which adds an arresting vibrancy to the otherwise monochromatic composition. The selective use of red feels intentional, almost symbolic, drawing the viewer into the depth of her mystery and grace.
Charcoal, with its rich, velvety texture, lends itself beautifully to capturing the nuanced shadows and highlights in this intimate portrait, enhancing the depth and mood of the piece. Measuring at 14" x 17", the artwork's modest size invites close inspection, creating a personal connection between the viewer and the subject. This piece is a timeless portrayal of feminine strength and vulnerability, expressed through the subtle power of charcoal and color contrast.
Steve Jackson, a resident of Kapaa on Kauai, finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the islands for his artwork. “Art has always been a passion of mine,” he shares. “Aside from a single drawing class in college back in 1966, I’ve had no formal training. It wasn’t until I retired in 2008 that I began exploring drawing and painting more seriously.”
Now, Steve creates art purely for enjoyment and relaxation, often accompanied by the soothing sounds of Hawaiian music. His preferred mediums, pencil and charcoal, help him capture the essence of his surroundings, as he seeks out subjects that naturally bring their own beauty to life on paper.
