Item Description

This vibrant 20" x 16" watercolor on paper by Dorothy Yung bursts with dynamic energy and expressive forms. The abstract composition blends bold, flowing brushstrokes with delicate washes of color, capturing a sense of movement and spontaneity. The bright palette, with its playful contrasts of yellow, blue, green, and hints of red, invites the viewer to explore the shapes and forms that emerge from the canvas. Yung’s signature abstract style shines through in this piece, evoking emotion and curiosity with its fluidity and creative expression.

Dorothy Yung (Rong Zhian) was born in Shanghai, China, Dorothy Yung left China in 1949 with her family, first to Hong Kong and then later to Brazil. In 1958, she came to the U.S. to study art at Garland Jr. College in Massachusetts. Influenced by the Impressionist and Cubist masters, Yung created her own, intensely personal artistic style called ‘Spiritual Dimensionalism’. When viewed closely, her paintings reveal multiple dimensions with a graceful array of spirits that re-tell stories with ancient Chinese poetry, making them more relevant today than perhaps they’ve ever been. Chinese poetry and Western expressionism blend together on her canvas, not as separates or opposites, but as one. Through her paintings, the spirit world dances like whispers from another world, and worlds within worlds, reminding us here on earth that there is much more to life than the physical world.
