This item consists two composite linocut prints by local artists Shannon Hiramoto, of the machinemachine studio in Koloa, and her father, Charles. Shannon creates the artwork, Charles then carves the linocut blocks and uses them to print her images and finally, Shannon takes the smaller individual prints and stitches them together into the finished piece.

The first print, "Endless Seas 1", is a composite of six colored linocut print panels stitched together with thread into an integrated piece measuring 11" x 14" overall. The image depicts stylized rolling waves seemingly stretching out to the horizon. The eye wants to be guided by the geometric pattern that the finely detailed waves exhibit but a smooth flow is interrupted by areas of various muted colors that catch the eye and lend an abstract but playful quality to the overall piece of art. The stitchery used to join the small panels is very fine and enables a seemless transition from one panel to the next.

The second print, "Endless Seas 2", is also a composite but this time of twelve monochrome print panels that are stitched together into an original piece also measuring 11" x 14", matching the size of its companion composite print. Here the flow of the eye across the rolling waters is more easily achieved owing to the monochrome color scheme. The organization and energy of the waves is quite pronounced and serves to create a hypnotic visual treat for the viewer. 

Hung together, the colored and monochrome composite prints would make a stunning display sure to delight the viewer. 

From the artist, SHANNON HIRAMOTO:
My grandmother, Mildred Hiramoto, taught me to sew when I was 14. Our first project was a pair of shorts using her stash of vintage polyester fabric. Next we made carseat covers for my '69 VW Squareback. After that it was a flurry of sewing everything I could imagine. My grandmother passed in 2011 and I miss her everyday. Sewing is one way to keep her spirit close and now I'm passing the skill down to my 7 year-old daughter Charli. I started my company/experiment called Machinemachine in 2007 and am continually excited about meeting customers and making things everyday!

Over the years I've become known for my obsession with mu'umu'u. I began #muumuumonth in January 2015 as a fun way to celebrate the historic and beautiful garment that is so special to Hawai'i. I've also been documenting mu'umu'u that I and others come into contact with at TheMuumuuArchive.com
