Item Description

Although Henry Thoreau is best known for traveling a good deal in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts, he did leave the village on occasion. One place that he frequented was a short train trip away, the city of Boston.

From the time he was a toddler when the Thoreau family lived on Beacon Hill, to the places he visited as an adult, Thoreau had many connections with Boston. Join Public Historian Richard Smith for a walk around "Thoreau's Boston." On this two-hour walk you'll see the places Thoreau was well acquainted with, including the home where he lived, the building where Walden was published, the buildings where he lectured, and the places his friends gathered.

Richard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-Century American literature since 1995. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter for 25 years and has portrayed Henry Thoreau at Walden Pond, around the country and in Canada. He has written or edited 11 books for Applewood books and is a regular contributor to Discover Concord Magazine.
